Blog Around The Clock

Did you enjoy the video I posted? I hope you did. A Whole New World is one of my favorite songs and I think it is most appropriate for this new blogger. It took me a while to figure out how to post that video...but I'm learning fast so be patience and I will keep adding other interesting features as we go along.

Mr. B. is going back to the Philippines tomorrow. It's his once-a-year trip to visit his family, relatives and friends. I've been there twice. It's a bit hot there for a furry creature like me. Notice me wearing sunglasses in the slideshow? That picture was taken in Manila a few years back. There I became friends with a few other furries like me - Pecker, Shimmie, Alfred, Lisa, other names I can't remember.

This year I am staying home. With this new blog going on, I must make sure someone is taking care of it. Besides, Mr. B. told the cleaner Lily to come clean the apartment next week (like we will mess it up when he's gone!) and I am responsible for handling the salary. Phew... a bear's got to do what a bear's got to do.

Mr. B. hasn't decided who to take to Manila this year. Russell goes "Me! me! me! me! me!" as usual but he's been there a few times too. Most likely candidates are Bonbon and Jonjon, the identical twins (since they are the most likely to fit into the remaining small space in Mr. B.'s luggage).

Tomorrow is also Mr. B. birthday. He will be spending half of the time in the airport, on the plane and in the car. Hopefully, A-Ma and A-Kong will have some surprise instore for him when he gets home. By the way, pictured here is Mr.B. bedroom in their Manila apartment. Nice, ha?

This will be it for today. We bears will be lining up in the living room and sing the Birthday Song to Mr. B. first thing tomorrow morning.

Birthday Boy

Mr. B. told me he got a surprised birthday lunch at work today. I would think it was unexpected because he doesn't seem to be very much aware (or care) that his birthday is coming up in two days. People at work (whom he said he really care about a lot) (he said I should include that line in case some of them sneak in to read his blog, especially someone called QQ) took him to a tonkatsu Japanese restaurant (one where they serve deep-fried breaded pork loin). After a hearty meal, they surprised him with a very creative birthday cake (pictured here).

Now, a lot can be said about the cake.

Firstly, there were 2 very fierced-looking pandas on top with round heads made from heart-stoppingly sweet white chocolate. Then there were a few chewy green-colored bamboo chocolates sticking out behind them (remember that pandas eat shoots and leaves unlike us cute brown bears who would choose a fillet of salmon anytime) and a chocolate fence to make sure they don't escape from the cake/platform. It was all so nice and sweet and Mr. B. said he was very touched although he very seldom expresses his feelings (you hear that, QQ?).

Anyhow, I heard there was a threat of posting the photos taken today. I am sure Mr. B. will not be too happy to see his old-looking self pasted in the digital world, but that's life, no? You get older by the year and you look older by the minute too...

Idol Eyes

Mr. B came home from work quite early today (well, 7.30pm is considered early for him) to catch American Idol on television. Somehow, he has this obsession about talent shows like this, specifically singing competitions. It makes me cringe (from the cabinet I perch on) watching him discuss local shows like Super Idol with his partner D. with so much enthusiasm, making his own judgments on how good or bad the performers are, on how stupid the judges' comments are, and the likes.

Well, I know Mr. B. do understand a bit about music (his iPod library could tell one so much about the type of person he is without even seeing him), I know he studied piano (one year) and classical guitar (one year) in his younger days. He also told me that there was a point in his life where he considered making a living out of singing in a band!

"I was in the choir in high school and our musical director inspired me so much that I took piano and guitar lessons and learned more about music. During my college freshman year, a few of us choir members who graduated formed a band called Bricklane and started rehearsing every week. That was one of the most joyous episodes of my life. We slowly built our repertoire of songs (my biggest solo being All My Life by the band America). We went around different hotel lobby bars to listen and learn from other show bands, hanged out at Shakey's for rootbeer and garlic bread (we couldn't even afford pizza!) and performed during our school activities."

"We were planning this big coming out concert but before it came into being, we disbanded for reasons too complicated to explain. For years, I couldn't stand watching bands perform. It used to make me so sad and disappointed that my dream never materialized. Then reason took over and I finished college an architect instead of a musician."

Years of cigarette smoking have turned Mr. B.'s voice more suitable for the bathroom than a concert hall. But I still watch him plug his earphones and dance around the living room to who-knows-what and once in a while, he still plays All My Life by America.

That's when I would notice the sparkle in his eyes.

A Shared Life

I came into being a little more than 10 years ago. It was the time when Mr. B's (pictured here as a toddler) life was at its lowest point (according to him). So it was a daunting mission for me from the moment I went home with him. He said my close set button eyes are expressive - one moment kind and tender, the next wild and intense - that they brought him comfort and assurance. And I thought to myself, just maybe my eyes are a reflection of his - his every mood and emotion as he goes through this rollercoaster ride of life.

In the 10 or so years together, I've seen every ups and downs, every joy and disappointment, every tear and laughter. He said I am his best friend forever. Maybe so. As he embark in this wonderful journey called life, I shall see it through my eyes; to record every detail that made it so fascinating and interesting. I would be the small voice of his big life, the small eyes of his big and complicated world.
